Public Comments and Q&A from Public Hearing on The Oleanders
Jan 11 2021

In September 2008, Hurricane Ike destroyed family developments. Since that time, the Galveston Housing Authority, in cooperation with McCormack Baron Salazar and the General Land Office completed construction of 144 replacement housing units. These units are located in two mixed income developments on the former sites of Cedar Terrace and Magnolia Homes. Currently, there are no plans to redevelop the former Oleander Homes site. Additionally, the General Land Office is in the process of developing 97 project based scattered sites which should be completed by January 2019.

The rebuilding of the public housing units are in compliance with HUD 24 CFR 941-202 which provides guidance on site and neighborhood standards for the program and will comply with affirmatively furthering fair housing guidelines. The goal of the GHA is to develop quality housing reflective of Galveston's rich architectural history.  Hopefully, the new construction will spur revitalization of the city's neighborhoods and stimulate private investment.
