Development Plan
Overview
The Galveston Housing Authority is committed to providing unique, modern, safe and affordable housing to residents who qualify for public housing programs. We have an active history of service within the Galveston community dating back to GHA's formation by the mayor of Galveston in 1940.
Over the years we have seen the growth of the public housing sector keeping pace with Galveston's own growth as a city. Along the way, GHA has replaced older units with new construction so that our residents may enjoy the best that public housing has to offer. Site modernization and redevelopment, ranging from scattered site homes to innovative public housing units, has been a continuing theme throughout the history of the GHA.
The Galveston Housing Authority is directly involved, naturally, with ongoing Hurricane Ike recovery efforts to replace four damaged public housing sites with newly constructed units. These units will be designed with input provided directly by the Galveston community.
With the cooperation of Civic Design Associates, Urban Land Institute and collaborative input from the citizens of Galveston, GHA is preparing a Master Plan for the redevelopment of the Oleander Homes, Cedar Terrace, and Magnolia Homes sites. The goal of this project is to rebuild with public housing units which reflect new ideas about what public housing can be in the areas of form, function, and aesthetics, as well as the very way in which it interacts with the community.
Beginning in July of 2009, GHA is hosting a Master Plan Charrette open to the public to generate ideas regarding the look and the features of these new units. This Public Design Workshop, as well as an On-site Design Studio, will take public housing in Galveston to an exciting, fresh new level. The more Galveston's residents participate, the more the end result will reflect the vision, goals, and values of her citizens.
This is just one more example of GHA working with the community to ensure a strong public housing opportunity for those drawn to the beautiful island of Galveston!
