GHA is located in a region of the country that sometimes experiences extreme weather conditions - the most devastating being the hurricane. It is essential that the GHA orchestrate an effective evacuation procedure for those residents who have indicated in writing that they have no one to assist them during a Category 3 or above hurricane or a mandatory evacuation called by the mayor.
GHA begins Hurricane season in March where contact is made to all Public Housing Residents via Mail, Newsletter and Resident meetings. Each resident is asked to fill out a form indicating if they will need transportation off of the island if a mandatory evacuation is called or indicate if they have their own transportation for evacuation either with family members, friends or their own vehicle. In order for GHA to maintain the most comprehensive list of residents who need assistance, this process continues throughout the hurricane season.
GHA maintains collaborative agreements with Coach USA, to provide buses to transport the GHA residents to Bryan/College Station, The Emergency Management Office in Bryan / College Station, Texas to provide emergency shelter for the evacuees and also local hotels in Bryan / College Station. In the unlikely event that Coach USA buses are unable to access the Island, GHA residents will evacuate with the City of Galveston to shelters in either Austin or San Antonio, Texas.
If an evacuation is necessary, Resident Pick up locations are as follows:
Gulf Breeze and Holland House Senior Housing Developments will have pick up location in the front of the building by the office
The Oaks Senior Duplexes pick-up location will be in the driveway in front of the Duplexes
Scattered Sites pick up location will be at the Island Community Center
Upon notification of an evacuation, the Executive Director will begin the evacuation process as well as the Preventative Maintenance Plan within the housing developments and the Island Community Center (ICC) where GHA’s main administrative offices are located. Please note, if a mandatory evacuation is called all GHA Housing Developments will be vacated and closed until it is clear for residents and staff to return.
