The Galveston Housing Authority, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), hosted an Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Conference, on Thursday, February 18, 2010, at the Island Community Center.

The conference focused on the legal requirements of Fair Housing Laws, and initiatives to affirmatively further fair housing in the community and what it entails. The conference also highlighted National Fair Housing Best Practices. The conference was opened with a welcome and greeting from City of Galveston, Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas. Speakers for the day included Gary Sweeney., Director, Ft. Worth, Texas, Regional Office, Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, Sue Tarver., Director, Houston Field Office, Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO), U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Steve McIntyre , Supervising Attorney, Lone Star Legal Aid, and Sterling Patrick, Director of Grants and Housing, City of Galveston.

The event was free to the public and was well received Those in attendance included local officials, citizens and GHA employees Everyone had the chance to take a break and tour the 2010 Census bus which was having an event at the Island Community Center’s parking lot
