The Galveston Housing Authority hosted a roundtable discussion of affordable housing solutions for the city of Galveston. The meeting took place at the community room of the Holland House in Galveston. The purpose of this gathering of community leaders was to discuss and build consensus regarding the creation of affordable housing in Galveston. The meeting was facilitated by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), a governmental entity whose mission includes helping to build better relationships through joint problem-solving and constructive response. Topics covered included the Galveston Housing Authority’s Home Ownership, Lease to Purchase and Project Based Voucher Programs as well as an exploration of possible preferences for workforce members and full-time students.

Among those in attendance were representatives from Lone Star Legal Aid, Galveston Economic Develop Partnership, the City of Galveston Department of Housing and Grants, and Galveston Alliance of Island Neighborhoods. The discussions proved to be valuable in building understanding of the challenges low to middle income residents face in their housing choices. Attendees came out of the round table more educated about the programs the Galveston Housing Authority offers to enhance housing choices. Based on the success of this roundtable another will be planned in the future.
