January 8, 2010-The Galveston Housing Authority (GHA) would like to clarify comments made recently at a Planning Commission meeting by Howard Merrill with Rey de la Reza (RDLR), architects for the Oaks, that have been taken out of context.

Recently, Mr. Merrill was quoted as stating “the architects designed the original Oaks intentionally to face inward because of the “unsavory characters” that dealt drugs and engaged in other illicit activities in the surrounding neighborhood.” This implies that in the original Oaks design the houses were built faced inward soley due to crime concerns on GHA’s property. GHA wants to make it clear these concerns were related to the surrounding properties not under GHA’s jurisdiction and were not in reference to the Oaks complex or other GHA properties. Additionally, it is important to clarify that crime issues were but one of several important factors considered in the design of the Oaks. These design elements are incorporated into all developments that are undertaken by GHA.

In planning the design for The Oaks, a prime objective was to establish an environmentally friendly housing community following the principles of Smart Growth for sustainability. These principles include creating pedestrian friendly neighborhoods, fostering a sense of community with neighbors knowing neighbors, creating walkable and attractive neighborhoods, and encouraging community and stakeholder collaboration.

The GHA strongly believes all of these design elements are essential in developing a vibrant and sustainable community.
