Healthy Neighborhoods Workshop. Hurricane Ike left the residents of our community and neighborhoods vulnerable to a variety of health issues, such as increased mental stress and diminished nutrition and lack of exercise, among many others. Come find out how your community affects your health, which features of Galveston support health and which features create challenges, and how we can work together to create a healthier community. This workshop will review some of the broad health impacts of the hurricane and their cumulative effect, and also present a range of changes that could significantly improve the health of our children and families. The workshop will provide information on what individuals and families can do to better protect their health in the current Galveston environment as well as resources to support healthy behaviors and activities.

Dates: July 15 (Thurs) 11:30-1 July 23 (Fri) 11:30-1 July 27 (Tues) 11:30-1 July 29 (Thurs) 11:30-1 Aug 10 (Tues) 11:30-1

Post-Ike Environmental Health Workshop. Have you wondered how safe the environment is around Galveston since the storm? Does Galveston’s history of lead exposure concern you? Come find out the facts, including what environmental threats to your health are, and what you can do to protect you and your family. This workshop will review impact on the Galveston area by Hurricane Ike, and include information on which contaminants were found in the sediment that washed over Galveston and how to avoid long-term exposure to the heavy metals found such as lead and arsenic. We will also discuss specific warnings to prevent exposure, and how to make your home, workplace, and children’s environment safer. Written materials will be distributed with information on safe gardens, childproofing your home and yard, how to get your child tested for exposure to lead, and local resources to help you.

Dates: Aug 4 (Wed) 5:30-7 Aug 6 (Fri) 11:30-1 Aug 13 (Fri) 11:30-1 Aug 19 (Thurs) 11:30-1

Workshops will include lunch and DOOR PRIZES!
